TV Show Gems and Guilty Pleasures

DVD on TV changed my universe.

Anyway, I have more fun with Netflix renting TV shows than the movies most of the time unless they're really solid otherwise unseen gems like The Station Agent and Pieces of April.

Currently, I'm watching the FIRST SEASON of Arrested Development. This show is so typically FOX-ish that it's not typically FOX-ish. FOX is only made up of animated shows that all have sharp wit. This show follows suit but I can see this show fitting in very well on a premium cable network like HBO or Showtime. So far, I'm only on Episode 8, but I'm loving the writing. It's both very sharply witty, biting, and stupid at the same time. "STEVE HOLT!"

The other TV gem I can connect to Netflix is Deadwood on HBO. That show is well written, gritty, and uncomfortably fun at times. If you're not prissy, you should check it out.

GUILTY PLEASURES (These are non Netflix related)

1) Average Joe - one of the rare non-MTV/VH1 reality shows I'd commit to watching and since I don't have MTV or VH1 at the moment, this trash dating show will have to do. (As for dating shows, I only like Blind Date and the other really uber-trashy ones for the sake of their campiness. The Network Dating shows are ridiculously pompous.) I love rooting for the dorks so much that I keep conceding to how much I am one of those guys. GO JOES! (And on a JOE-tangent, I've recently started reading my first ever GI Joe monthly. They just reset a new series written by Joe Casey with great artwork. Since we don't have GI Joe cartoons anymore, it's fun to see where the characters are now through comic books! Check it out: GI Joe, America's Elite, currently on issues #0 and #1)

2) Beauty and the Geek - I only watched the aftermath/reunion show tonight, but I think I would've loved to watch the geeks to root for them again (though this wasn't a dating show.)

WAR OF THE WORLDS review

I wanted to post right away about War of the Worlds (WOFW). Don't see it, don't waste your money! Unless you really like movies that involve the main characters running. And hiding. And running some more. Ah, and then the movie is over so they can stop running now. Ugh. It was a well made movie, just very unsatisfying. I think it's getting good reviews because Spielberg didn't set the bar too high. It's not an Independence Day-type of movie (now there's one I always enjoy seeing), but more like a mix of Shyamalan's Signs (another favorite) and any zombie movie because of the running-away-from-danger aspect. I think that should be a sub-category for movies. "Alien invasion/Run for your life" or "Zombie/Run for your life". I just don't feel like I've seen a complete movie. Tom Cruise also seemed to miraculously make (almost) all of the right decisions and have incredible instincts. It was a little too convenient. There would be no movie otherwise. Oh, and I've also seen some of the original 1953 WOFW on cable. Now that was an exciting film for 1953. And the title is misleading for this movie. It may be more appropriate for the 1938 radio broadcast or the original movie, but not this 2005 one. Like the crazy Tim Robbins character says, "It's not a war, it's an extermination." The best thing about WOTW is at least it's got some originality as far as details. The first attack scene was impressive. All the effects in the movie were great. But just don't waste your money or an afternoon on it.

If you really want to watch something entertaining, go see The Longest Yard. I saw it the day after WOTW... now that was a laugh-out-loud, good time.
